The Invisible Obstacle to Mental Health?

Capitalism.

I’ll just say it: if you’re working your ass off and still just barely getting by, you are not the problem. You’re not lazy. You’re not broken. And you’re definitely not alone.

Living paycheck-to-paycheck isn’t just “hard.” It’s soul-crushing. It’s like this constant background hum whispering, “You’re not safe.”

And that whisper? It messes with your whole system:

  • Sleepless nights, lying awake doing math in your head

  • An anxious body stuck in fight-or-flight

  • Tension in your shoulders and jaw you can’t shake

  • Fatigue that makes even small things feel impossible

That’s not weakness. That’s what happens when your nervous system is under siege.

The Soul-Sucking Truth About Work

Let’s be real: wage labor is soul-sucking.

Dragging yourself into a meaningless job, day after day, is enough to break anyone down. Then add impossible choices like:

  • Pay the bills or eat healthy food?

  • Go to the doctor or risk the debt?

  • Bond with your newborn or clock in at a job three months postpartum because there’s no safety net?

Tell me how that’s “normal.” Because to me, it feels like cruelty dressed up as ‘business as usual.’

Money, Shame, and Worthlessness

In our culture, money equals power. Which means when you don’t have enough, the story quickly becomes: I’m not enough.

That’s how financial stress transforms into shame, depression, and feelings of worthlessness.

But here’s the truth: you are not the failure. The system is.

Can We Please Talk About This?

Because I don’t think we talk about it enough.

The truth is, late stage capitalism is wrecking our mental health. It’s grinding us down, body and soul. And most of us are carrying it silently — in our fatigue, in our anxiety, in the shame we think is personal but really isn’t.

So let’s break the silence.

This is (NOT) business as usual.

Why This Conversation Matters for Women in Business

We can’t build sustainable businesses or healthy communities if we ignore the invisible toll of late stage capitalism on our mental health.

By naming it, we give ourselves permission to:

  • Reframe “burnout” as a systemic issue, not a personal flaw

  • Prioritize boundaries and self-care as business essentials

  • Build communities of support where women leaders can thrive

  • Redefine success beyond just the numbers

A Space for Women to Gather, Heal & Grow Together

One of the ways I’m actively responding to these pressures is by offering networking groups, offered through Wildish. These aren’t the kind of stiff, transactional meet-ups where you swap business cards and bounce. Instead, they’re sacred circles + business dialogue for women entrepreneurs who want connection and growth.

  • Ritual: Networking for Witches & Creatives meets monthly in SE Portland — it blends meditation, ceremony, and intentional business conversations. wildish.love+1

  • “(NOT) Business as Usual: Anti-Capitalist Networking Group” is a space to dismantle limiting beliefs, reimagine business models, and share real challenges in a supportive circle. wildish.love

If you’re craving deeper connection, raw honesty, and a community of women doing business differently — I’d love you to join.
